MY FIRST SWIMMING CARNIVAL Yesterday on Tuesday I had my first swimming Carnival. I was nervous but it was fun. First I went on the bus to Waves Swimming pool area. Next I watched the other students do butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Then Mr Mullan let us have a free swim so we could go into the pool for a bit. A few minutes later it was recess time. I talked to my friends too. Then Mr Mullan announced some more races. At that time we had to go to the 20metre races. I got a third ribbon. It was green. When I went to the Canteen the line took forever. So long. We had another free swim in the pool. Then it was presentation. Then we all went back to school. I felt really happy and excited. WHO ARE THESE WHITE PEOPLE? They came on the backs of strange creatures. They wear blankets over their bodies. The blankets are not of colours we have seen. The strange beings have white skin. We think that they are sick. Why are they so careful about not getting dirt on themselves? We aborigines have always been sitting in the dirt! They eat off round stones! That is quite strange. They must be women because they have no beards. They draw with unusual rocks. We wonder why they draw on white materials and not on cave walls. Men from our tribe say that they laugh at the way we live. We are not sure how these women communicate. Their language is not like ours. Maybe they are the “Holy Spirits”. Who knows? Who are these white people? Why have they come here and will they hurt us? By Jumaana 5/4C |

SAMPLES OF 5 MINUTE WRITING
He could do no more. Clinging to the beams he tried to support his unconscious friend and prevent both of them from slipping and landing on the enemies below.
He was becoming desperate. His hands were full of sweat and his whole village had been captured. The enemy had ambushed them in the night while celebrating a friend’s birthday. They hadn’t had any suspicions that there were traitors in the midst. It was known that trust was valued in the Indian village.
Fighting back his tears, Jake thought and remembered about that fateful night. Suddenly, he found himself slipping and he blacked out from the kill. By Powey, 6/5A

Looking up the streets, he just caught sight of the mysterious creature flying above him. It was a disgusting, black bird. He stared in awe at the unusual monster.
It had long, sharp claws and an ugly face. Its tail slapped the air, propelling itself through the clouds. Its wing dipped and headed for him.
Before he could run or scream, the bird’s claws dug into his shirt and lifted him. He tried to scream but something was blocking his throat.
Trying his hardest to fight the monster, he passed out and all went black.

There’s no question she enjoys my pain. As tears rolled down my face, as I stare into my father’s eyes that are not blinking, I can feel her laughing. She could not care less that my father had just been shot. All she cared about was laughing. The bullet that pieced my father’s heart had come from my own gun. I thought this had to be a crazy nightmare, but deep down, I knew that this was real.
Most of the time I wouldn’t dare even try to stand up for myself, but this time it was different. My dad was lying lifeless on the hard ground with eyes frozen on my face. The last teardrop that would ever come from his eyes had slowly rolled down his cheek and landed on his mouth. I left my father’s right side and walked over to his left, slowly elevating the gun toward my forehead.
The truth is I didn’t know if I could do it. My palms were sweaty, knees weak and my arms were trembling. ‘One pull’ is what I was saying to myself. ’That’s all it takes to stop the pain.’ BANG! I fell to the ground clutching my dad’s hand with a smile that could never be wiped off my face. By Erin, 6/5A |

It was a long sunny day, the hot wind was blowing in my face.. I felt like I was going to pass out any minute from now. I needed water. The only thought in my head was water splashing down from a roaring waterfall or water dripping from a tap. I also tried to think positive thoughts like, I’m near home or I don’t need water now I can wait. But whenever I thought of something else the sudden flash of water came to my mind. I was about to take my next step when a navy blue cat was standing in my path.
I slowly walked towards the cat to examine it. On its head were two slightly bent ears with two yellow dots just like my sisters rotten banana which only had a spot of yellow on it. It had long whiskers and several bells on its golden yellow collar. It had an extra long curly tail with a big ball of fluff hanging on the end like a cotton ball dyed black. Then I recognised something on the cat's forehead. It looked like a upside down V coloured green. I shuffled a little bit closer like a baby taking its first steps. Just then I thought how silly I’ve been not to look what was engraved on the collar. I read Tamama in big fat letters. I looked around to see if anyone was looking for a cat. I even shouted out to find the owner, but no one replied. So I took the cat home and hid it in my bedroom where no one could see it. And that’s when my troubles began.
